the nyc dyke march is today, and the facebook profile for the dyke march states: “the march is for self-identified women; supporters cheer us on!”
as in, a space for female-identified and dyke-identified folks. and yet, i see queer contingents of folks who do not identify as female, making lots of plans to occupy this march and be participants. and, what the actual fuck?
i have a lot of personal attachments to being a lesbian. i occupied dyke spaces when i used female pronouns and id’d as a dyke. however, i do not use these identifiers any longer, and i think it’s really important to check the privilege that comes along with id’ing as trans male/masculine. aka, it’s misogynist to insert yourself into a safe space for female identified people if you are not female identified(!!!)
as an aside, does this also not insinuate that trans men aren’t “real men” if they are permitted in dyke/female-id spaces? what are we really saying here, queerz? all i’m saying, from observation alone, is that safe spaces for women-identified people are super important, and if you no longer/have never id’d as such, kindly make some fucking room.
dykes, female-identified folks, trans women, lesbians, cis queer women, et al: march on. i’ll be cheering for you from the sidelines.
